Having a good foundation starts simply with paying attention to what touches the earth. In yoga, we spend a good amount of time in a quadruped position (hands and knees), and supporting our body weight with our hands.
When done in alignment, we can load the muscles instead of the ligaments, which makes them stronger and makes you more mobile! (Mobility is about strengthand flexibility together, we'll talk about that next time!)
This works for everyone but is especially beneficial if your elbows look more like the top picture. For more shoulder opening and strength, here are a few simple tips:
*Place your hands directly under your shoulders. *Spread your fingers, and equally weight your inner and outer hand. *Straighten your arms, so there is no bend in either direction. **bonus** Gently slide your shoulder blades around until they are flush with your upper back. Now push down from the back of your heart all the way through your fingers.
Do this any and every time your hands are on the ground!
